Complaint
This bulletin included a report on a recent Executive Order by President Trump which the presenter introduced as banning “transgender athletes from female sports competitions†in the USA. Three viewers complained this was misleading, as the order did not prevent trans men from taking part in female sports competitions.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½â€™s editorial standards of accuracy.
Outcome
The ECU agreed that the Order did not have the effect of excluding all transgender athletes from female sporting competitions, but noted that the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½â€™s Editorial Guidelines require “d³Ü±ðâ€, rather than absolute, accuracy. The item included a clip of President Trump in which he referred to not allowing “m±ð²Ô†to compete in women’s events, making it clear his order was aimed at trans women. In the ECU’s judgment this would have prevented viewers from forming the misleading impression complained of, and the report was duly accurate.
