For this live broadcast from St Magnus International Festival and completing its residency, the 蜜芽传媒 SSO bring a richly varied programme of music from the twentieth century. Ives' iconic and atmospheric work displaces the musicians around the cathedral to pose the 鈥渦ltimate question of existence鈥� whilst Ravel鈥檚 dazzling orchestration of his earlier piano work conjures up memories of friends lost in battle in WWI. The final work brings together the voices of Valentine and Leiferkus in the dark and haunting reflections on the subject of death in one of Shostakovich鈥檚 most powerful works setting the poets Rilke, Lorca and Apollinaire. Thomas Dausgaard, one of the world鈥檚 most renowned conductors, directs the 蜜芽传媒 SSO in what promises to be an intense and moving event.
