Concert information
Rachmaninov’s career took him from the twilight of Imperial Russia to the cocktails and swimming pools of Beverly Hills. And yet something timeless echoes throughout everything he wrote: the ancient znamenny chants of the Russian Orthodox Church. They’re present in the long, singing melodies of his mighty Third Piano Concerto – performed here by the “phenomenal” (Frankfurter Allgemeine) Behzod Abduraimov. They haunt the glittering, Art Deco world of the brilliant Symphonic Dances. And they’re the profoundly beautiful soul of his Vespers, written to console in the darkest days of the Great War. With the ѿý Singers, singing a specially abridged version of the Vespers, Thomas Dausgaard and the ѿý SSO explore musical roots that run deeper than any words.
Please note there will be two intervals (the first of approximately 20 minutes; the second of approximately 15 minutes). The concert will finish at about 5.15pm.
The concert will be recorded for future broadcast on ѿý Radio 3.
