My friend Sid Brown came up to me one day and said 'What about joining the parachute regiment Mesh(my nickname during the war)? I said 'Alright then'even though I was only 8 stone. Sid marched in and when he came out he put his thumb up at me as if to say 'I'm in'. My turn came to go in to see and I marched into Major Cowan and the Major knew me personally by name and he said 'What do you want Smith? To join the parachute regiment sir. He turned and said to me. Get out you are not heavy enough to land without a b**** parachute.
