#ChooseToChallenge - Women's Day 2021

To mark International Women's Day 2021, we're sharing stories of inspirational women and girls from across the world who are making waves and challenging gender stereotypes

7 women, 7 countries, 7 challenges

  • “The strongest voices to advocate for girls are girls themselves”

    Sierra Leone

Marian Tina Conteh is the presenter for radio programme Wae Gyal Pikin Tinap (‘When a Girl Child Stands Strong’). Through special episodes with young guests as co-hosts, the stories and challenges faced by girls in Sierra Leone are told by girls, for girls.
  • “I realised that if I could educate my daughters, they could be equal to boys”

    Bangladesh

Kolpona tells us how the Hello, I Am programme inspired her to refuse to marry off her daughter at an early age. Our project in Bangladesh is breaking harmful social norms and helping girls have more say in decisions about their future.
  • “I am the only lady on the mechanics course”

    South Sudan

Our project called Building Futures is supporting women, like Agiko Magret, to challenge gender stereotypes and increase enrolment in courses that lead to professions traditionally dominated by men.
  • Nigeria

Karimot Odebode stopped by to add her voice to our spoken word series #Woke4Naija in Nigeria for International Women’s Day. Watch her post on the ѿý Media Action Naija Facebook page.
  • “I hold my head high because I know I’m not in anyone’s pocket”

    Iraq

Nihad al-Jaberi, Senior Editor at Radio Al Mirbad, describes the radio station’s role in promoting dialogue between citizens and the authorities, holding those in power to account by bringing the microphones and cameras to them, wherever they are.
  • “Gender is not destiny”

    India

Our teen whodunit series helped turned Indian girls and boys into allies through TV drama – to address imbalances with perpetuating gender stereotypes in a country where marriage and motherhood are expected for adolescent girls. Read to find out more about lead character Kitty.
  • “The more my business grew, the more I became independent”

    Somalia

Fardaus, 24, is a proud boutique owner who was supported in our training for 400 women entrepreneurs in Somalia. Find out more about our project.
