Safe to learn: ending violence against girls in Nepal

We helped unlock ways to end violence in schools to improve learning and health, increase economic potential, and reduce intergenerational violence

The ‘Blossom Project’ was a part of the Safe to Learn initiative of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children.

Safe to Learn is a global initiative dedicated to ending violence in and through schools, to support learning, shift social and gender norms and behaviors, and break intergenerational cycles of violence. Focused on children and schools in Nepal, South Sudan and Uganda, it is backed by partners representing civil society, the United Nations, donors, global partnerships, and the private sector.

Seven school girls are gathered around a table at school in Nepal. They have books and are working together to learn.
Through our Blossom project we helped to foster a safer and more supportive educational environment for children in Nepal

Working with this coalition in our Blossom project, we designed and implemented a communication strategy to change people's understanding and behaviour, and increase community engagement for child protection in the far western region of the country, in a project known as the Blossom project.

We supported radio and television partners along with the national networks, the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (ACORAB) and the Broadcasting Association of Nepal (BAN) to produce programmes and facilitate audience-led discussions at the local and national level in Tharu, Doteli and Nepali languages.

Through our training, technical and editorial mentoring and organisational leadership we supported media partners to develop and promote content around these important themes. And we helped to foster a safe and supportive educational environment for children so they could learn more effectively in 70 schools in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts of Sudurpaschim Province.

Our work aimed to improve protection of children from violence, exploitation, abuse, and neglect by developing and strengthening school systems to create a safer learning environment for all.
