Alan Carr

It’s series 6 of Interior Design Masters! What keeps you coming back each series?
I love the show basically. It is so much fun to film, there is never a dull moment. I think people are really getting to understand the power of design. People are becoming such homebodies, people are spending more and more time at home they’re ordering in food, streaming movies from their sofas and they want their homes to feel special. Since doing my show with Amanda Holden where we do up houses abroad, I can appreciate the challenges the designers face, budgets, time restraints and making design choices under pressure. I can really empathise with them, and I know the joy you feel when even the tiniest or gloomiest spaces has been transformed with lighting, wallpaper or a bold lick of paint. I’ve become such a convert to interior design - Michelle Ogundehin would be proud.
Any memorable moments from this series that stick to mind?
We’ve really pushed the envelope when it comes to the location and spaces they needed to do up, so lots and lots of memorable moments. We still had our regulars like shops and office spaces, but we introduced real exciting curve balls like luxury retirement homes, comedy clubs, the room rescue dogs go to before they find their forever home, interesting design challenges that will inspire and hopefully get the viewers at home saying, ‘how the hell are they going to make this workâ€.
What’s your favourite part about hosting Interior Design Masters?
I think it’s travelling the UK when I visit the designers to see how they are getting on. This series was the same, I spent a magical few days in Port Merion and Windermere. Places that I wouldn’t normally get to visit, when the designers and the tradesmen arrive it’s like the circus has come to town. In one episode we went to Battersea Dogs ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ and spending the day surrounded by pooches was just the best - I was in heaven and obviously wanted to rehome them all!!
Take us behind the scenes for a moment, any real design disasters? Did anything go awry?
Don’t want to throw any of our super talented designers under the bus, but I’m sure they would admit that there were some dubious design choices. No spoilers here but for the audience who like a bit of randomness and live for those ‘What were they thinking moments?!!’ Then they won’t be disappointed.
Did you pick up any new skills from the designers this series?
One designer was so good at resourcing, recycling and repurposing - you’ll see who it is immediately from the outset - that they inspired me to think, when it comes to taking something unloved and making it useful, nothing is off limits. They could repurpose anything and I’m not just talking odd bits of wood and fabric, it was really obscure stuff too, they would re-use and still make it look like something you’d get in a high-end designer shop. Completely inspiring and original.
Interior Design Masters has an incredible following of aspiring designers, what is one piece of advice for someone looking to take the next step in their career?
Be daring, be bold - because if it works just think how amazing you’ll feel, and if it doesn’t work, it’ll make great telly.
Michelle Ogundehin

It’s series 6 of Interior Design Masters! What keeps you coming back each series?
I keep coming back for the joy of witnessing raw talent get shaped into designerly form. I love watching the rollercoaster ride of learning; seeing the quiet ones blossom as they gain in confidence, and the ones who soak everything up like a sponge. These are the people you love to teach because no matter what happens you know they’re giving their all.
What’s your favourite part about hosting Interior Design Masters?
I think the show has an incredible following of anyone who’s interested in design, even if from afar because it’s so full of innovation and surprises. The challenges are designed to test our aspiring designers in many ways so from week to week you can never predict what might happen! Or who might do well. That’s what makes it so exciting.
Take us behind the scenes for a moment, any real design disasters? Did anything go awry?
Every series has its high and low points, but as the designers get more talented every series, now even the ‘disasters’ can have some merit!
Did you pick up any new skills from the designers this series?
There was some genius wizardry with plywood at one point, creating a finish that I have genuinely never seen before. And that’s saying something!
Interior Design Masters has an incredible following of aspiring designers, what is one piece of advice for someone looking to take the next step in their career?
People often come on the show clinging to a particular style that they like, for example Modernism or Scandi, when what they need to have refined is their point of view. In other words, what do they stand for from a design perspective? What is the curiosity or influences that drive their design decisions? What is it that makes them different? This is always more than just a style.

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
Honestly, I love a challenge! When the opportunity presented itself, it felt like my two worlds converging in the best way possible. I’ve always been at home in front of a camera, but at the time, I was a little less confident when it came to hands-on DIY. I wanted to push myself—because that’s the only way to grow! I was in my second year of my BA in Applied Interior Architecture, so it also felt like the ultimate, real-world work experience.
What can we expect from this series?
A total rollercoaster—there’s no other word for it! From me? I can design until the cows come home, but can I use a drill? Not so much! So, there was a lot of learning on the job, which made it even more exciting.
In three words, describe your design style.
Bold, Eclectic, Romantic—with a deep love and appreciation for natural materials. I’m all about layering textures, playing with shape, and using colour in a way that feels both striking and timeless.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
I’d love to be featured in Architectural Digest, so it would have to be an A-lister! I absolutely love Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys’ home—it’s incredible. I’m also obsessed with Paloma Elsesser’s Brooklyn space. Designing a brownstone townhouse in New York would be a dream, so I’d love to work with someone who has the budget and vision to really go for it!

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
I've always been a fan of the show, family and friends have often said it’s a perfect fit for me. I’ve never had the chance to fully showcase my interior design skills due to a lack of space and budget, so I saw this as the ideal opportunity to finally do that. It’s a dream come true to be able to share my passion for design on such a platform.
What can we expect from this series?
This year’s talent has been incredible. Viewers can expect to be inspired (I know I was!) by a variety of DIY hacks, stunning room transformations, and a fair share of jaw-dropping mishaps. Hate to be cliché but it was an experience full of blood, sweat, tears, and plenty of hilarious moments!
In three words, describe your design style.
Modern, Playful, Colourful.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
It would have to be Charity Shop Sue. We have a lot in common - both ginger, for starters and we've both had a hand in the fashion world. I know she already has a ton of furniture in her shop, waiting to be upcycled, so it would be the perfect chance to revamp her space showcasing how to achieve the look for less while being sustainable. We could also add some personality in the styling with the bric-a-brac, crockery, and all knick-knacks. I’d use vibrant colours and organic, yet modern designs to create a striking contrast between the upcycled elements and introduce dynamic wallpapers. Mixing playful prints on the walls, cushions and rugs, creating a space that’s both fun and sophisticated like Sue. Keeping the room fresh and lively injecting Sue’s personality into the space with my playful design style.

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
Interior Design masters is my favourite programme on TV, I love how it makes design accessible to the masses and inspires people to transform their surroundings for the better, showing it can be done within quick timelines and tight budgets. Since going into interior design and reinventing spaces for family and friends, something has come alive within me, and it just fits. I’m so inspired to transform - from the functional to the beauty, I love it all and I truly believe in the joy and peace it creates in people’s lives. I wanted to be able to showcase a style that hasn't yet been on Interior Design Masters.
What can we expect from this series?
What a talented bunch of lovely humans! I honestly love them all and find it fascinating how the same brief can be interpreted in so many ways. Each designer bought with them a wealth of knowledge and design power that was unique to them, and this really translates into everyone’s creations. This really is going to be a special series. I still can’t believe what we all achieved.
In three words, describe your design style.
Organic, Earthy, Restorative.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
I would love to design a room for my new pal Alan Carr and Amanda Holden for their renovation series. They always get their hands on the most gorgeous bare bones of properties and use amazing local suppliers and trades to bring life back into a home and village that will be well used, well loved and bring so much joy. Also, they seem to fit in regular snack and drink breaks, normally involving sunshine which seems a bit more relaxing than the two day turn around I’ve become accustomed to.

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
I applied for Interior Design Masters because I wanted a new creative adventure; I have always had a passion for interiors, and Interior Design Masters offered me the chance to see if I could cut the mustard as an interior designer…and to prove it’s never too late to teach an old dog news tricks!
What can we expect from this series?
I feel series 6 has really raised the bar in terms of the talent of the designers and the designs we produced; also, the locations we visited were amazing!
In three words, describe your design style.
Vintage, Quirky, Individual.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
Elvis Presley…I would love to re—vamp the jungle room!

I wanted to create change in my life and push my myself forward in a positive way. I'd always watched and loved the show; life is short so I thought 'Why not?’
What can we expect from this series?
In this series the bar is high from the off!! Lots of creativity, fun and quest to get the best from us and our designs.
In three words, describe your design style.
Colourful, Happy, Practical.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
The actress Aimee Lou Wood. I think she is so full of life vitality and individuality it would be wonderful to do some designs for her.

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
I would say the freedom to create amazing designs. Working in healthcare now, I don’t get many avenues to be creative and express that side of myself, Interior Design Masters was my way of letting loose and tapping into a part of me I had shut down for so long. Also, it was my chance to get real-life experience of being a professional designer. How fun, who wouldn’t do that!
What can we expect from this series?
Lots and lots of talent! The designers on this season are just so exceptional. How we think, how we source materials, the ideas we come up with, it’s just phenomenal. Get ready to be inspired! Also, look out for the tears, I was a never ending well of tears, but I loved every second of it.
In three words, describe your design style.
Organic, Attainable, Intentional.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
Beyonce! In a heartbeat! She was the first Black person that made me feel powerful as a Black person, and I see a lot of my culture influencing my design now, even though I didn’t know it back at the start of the show. I would want to express Boldness, Blackness, Brilliance in a Beyonce space, Cowboy Carter style!

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
I wanted a challenge to see if I had what it takes to design interiors for different needs. It's given me the most amazing opportunity to design actual spaces rather than textiles and products, which is what I do for my job currently.
What can we expect from this series?
From this series you can expect so much fun! Everyone is lovely and we've had the chance to go to some amazing places to transform some really fun spaces for very interesting people.
In three words, describe your design style.
70s Seaside Rustic.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
This is a really tricky question, but it would be cool to design the inside of a tour bus for one of my favourite bands. I pretty much purely listened to Foo Fighters when driving around whilst we were filming, so maybe those guys. I like the idea of designing small living spaces because it can be quite a challenge making them practical yet stylish.

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
After watching every season of Interior Design Masters and becoming a bit of an armchair critic, my wife dared me to prove I could do better. That challenge sparked something in me. Beyond just the competition, I’ve always had a deep passion for interiors, and I saw this show as the perfect opportunity to combine my love for design with a chance to express myself creatively and step outside my comfort zone.
What can we expect from this series?
Get ready for all your favourite design challenges, plus a few wild design briefs that nobody will be expecting. The bar is set incredibly high from episode one, with each designer bringing their own one-of-a-kind style and creative background to the table. We experienced mostly highs but we each face our fair share of challenges, with plenty of drama and laughs to keep things exciting.
In three words, describe your design style.
Graphic, Dramatic, Bohemian.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
It would have to be Helena Bonham Carter. She is cool, quirky and marches to the beat of her own drum. I think she would be open to an imaginative and eccentric interior.

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
My main motivation was my love for interior design and the power it has in transforming people’s lives. Also, to prove to myself and other woman that we can change our careers at any time even in our 40’s. I loved the show anyway as I was a big fan of it and my dream was that one day I would take part in it.
What can we expect from this series?
Fun, great designs and beautiful friendships between all of us.
In three words, describe your design style.
Rustic, Textural, Transformative.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
Trinny Woodall because I love the fact that she showed women that they can start a business in their 50’s and be successful. I also LOVE her style. If I can pick two, the second will be Davina McCall. She’s inspiring and seems like so much fun.

It’s nearly here! Series 6 of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ One’s Interior Design Masters is starting so soon! What was your main motivation in applying to be part of Interior Design Masters?
I’ve always had an artistic flair, or as my parents would say, I’ve always been the ‘arty farty’ one of the family. Having tried my hand at most arts and crafts over the years I have a passion for creating beautiful items. When I was afforded the opportunity to create beautiful spaces in both my own home, as well as commercial developments for the Asset Management company I work for, I feel like I found my true passion in Interior Design.
What can we expect from this series?
Oooh, that would be telling! It’s a series of ups and downs and some ‘interesting’ quirks along the way. Series 6 definitely features one of the most unique settings for an interior design project showcased on IDM.
In three words, describe your design style.
Contemporary. Luxe. Resourceful.
If you could design a room for any celebrity/public figure, who would you choose and why?
I’d love to design for the actress Catherine O’Hara as two of her fictional characters.
First as Kate McCallister in ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Alone…ooooh that house!! I would love to be let loose to give that mansion a zhuzh.
Second as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek. I think I’m adaptable enough to design for her in both stages of her character. My contemporary luxe signature style would sing in Moira’s original house, but as a designer I’m resourceful enough to create a luxe design, on a shoestring budget, at the Rosebud Motel.
