Liam Logan heads to Mossley Mill in Newtownabbey, where Scottish singer Emily Smith is back in Northern Ireland to perform a special concert.

It’s twelve years since Emily won the Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Scotland, and since then the Dumfriesshire singer has become celebrated far and wide for bringing both a freshness and a depth of meaning to the way she puts across the songs and ballads of her homeland.

Emily is also acclaimed as a writer of her own songs, newly sprung, but rooted in the tradition. However, on her latest album, Echoes, Emily includes none of her own compositions, but offers a mixture of traditional Scots songs and ones by contemporary writers, all interpreted in her distinctive style.

Kist features a sample of songs from Emily’s concert, and Emily tells Liam about the influences on her singing; about combining being a mother with her busy career, and how making music is an important part of her Scottish identity.
