The shortlists for The Carnegies, the UK’s longest running book awards for children and young people, have been announced. One of the writers on the shortlist for the Medal for Writing is Brian Conaghan for Treacle Town, which explores poverty and lack of opportunity as a teenage boy embraces slam poetry to escape gang violence and secure a hopeful future. Brian joins Len to discuss writing about his hometown of Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire.

And Callum McSorley, who won the McIlvanney Prize for Crime Writing for his debut novel Squeaky Clean, joins Len as his second book, Paperboy, is published today.
