Ploughing in the Glens, A Historical Flute Band and Cultural Collaboration

Helen visits a ploughing championship in Ballycastle, Willie uncovers some history during a flute band chat and the team reflect on a growing trend for cultural collaboration.

Helen Mark presents ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio Ulster’s weekly Ulster-Scots magazine show this week alongside Rab Lennox and Willie Hill.
Helen visits a ploughing championship in Ballycastle and reflects on the history and heritage on display. Meanwhile, during a chat with Hamilton Flute Band’s Gareth McComb, Willie uncovers some remarkable history regarding Gareth’s grandfather’s war efforts - which inspired a brand new piece of music. Also - friend of the show Jane Rea chats about performing on St Patricks Day – specifically playing the fiddle for Irish dancers and Highland dancers working in perfect harmony. This triggered a chat amongst the team about the increasing amount of cultural collaboration between the Ulster-Scots and other communities.
As always, listeners are invited to contact the programme with a good Ulster-Scots yarn or event to talk about. The easiest way to do that is by email - kintra@bbc.co.uk.
