Episode 1
A suspected drug user brings big trouble to a popular festival, police on jet skis put the brakes on speeding luxury yachts, and officers accidentally let cattle escape from a farm.
With exclusive access to the police service on the island paradise of Bermuda, we follow life on the front line for the near 400 officers keeping both holidaymakers and locals safe. A haven for the rich and famous, this stunning subtropical retreat has its fair share of challenges on both land and sea, with more than 3,000 crimes committed each year. We show how these dedicated officers, including around 30 from the UK, deal with the highs and lows of policing this British Overseas Territory.
Police are out in full force patrolling Harbour Nights, a popular summertime festival held in the capital city of Hamilton. Whilst officers Sherry Tucker and Carol Skerritt provide a reassuring police presence, constables Bryden Pedro and Shandora Burrows need to tackle a man suspected of taking illegal drugs near the festivities. Things get heated when the man aggressively resists arrest and is marched by officers through the busy festive streets, but calm is eventually restored to the event.
Despite Bermuda’s reputation for sun, sea and sand, Darrin Simons, the commissioner of police, says there are serious issues facing this island paradise, including shoplifting, theft and drug importation.
Patrolling the west of the island are officers Jen Suter and Caleb Jean Pierre. Originally from Britain, Jen is a former barber who swapped cutting hair for policing paradise in 30 degrees of subtropical heat. The duo are called to race to the scene of a reported controlled fire at a farm, which is creating smoke and negatively impacting nearby residents. But a communications mix-up results in the pair arriving at the wrong location.
Whilst a fire-and-rescue team attend to the real blaze seven miles away, Officer Pierre accidentally leaves the farm gate open, leading to a herd of cows making an impromptu bid for freedom. But it’s not long before Jen and Caleb herd the marauding cattle back inside, much to their own amusement.
Meanwhile at sea, Bermuda’s coastline is being policed by the likes of British-born reserve officer, Hugo Benziger. He says his new life on the island provides a millionaire’s lifestyle without being a millionaire. Super-rich boat owners often make the 650-mile journey from the nearest land mass in the United States to enjoy the stunning coastline. It’s down to Hugo, a jet-ski-riding officer, and his colleagues in Bermuda’s coastguard to make sure these luxury yachts don’t create danger by exceeding the island’s strict speed limit.
