Should we all be celebrating the Battle of the Boyne?

Big man Tim McGarry and the wee man David Hume travel back to the Battle of the Boyne and ask if we should all be celebrating King William’s victory?

Big man Tim McGarry and the wee man David Hume travel back to the year 1690 to tell the story of the Battle of the Boyne. They ask the question: should we all be celebrating King William’s victory?

The Battle of the Boyne is one of the most significant battles in Irish history. It was a battle for the English throne and was fought between the Catholic king James II and the Protestant king William III. The Protestant king won and as a result the victory is celebrated in Northern Ireland every year, and we all get a day off on 12 July.

But it was really much more significant than that. It secured the Protestant ascendancy in Ireland for generations and was a turning point in European history. But does the Battle of the Boyne also represent a victory over autocratic rule?

Tim and David travel to the River Boyne at Oldbridge, County Meath, where the battle was fought, to have a debate.
