Nothing Left to Chance

Doctors at NHS Lothian perform high-risk surgery to save their patient’s sight, and three specialists work together to treat a complex case of advanced ovarian cancer.

Consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon Rohit Gohil and consultant opthalmic surgeon Rob Peden are two of NHS Lothian’s leading specialists when it comes to complex cases involving the eye. Their next patient, 55-year-old pharmacy assistant Theresa, requires a rare procedure to correct both of her eyes, which are bulging so far out of their sockets that she is at risk of losing her sight.

Meanwhile, in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh's centre for the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer, consultant gynaecologist Nidal Ghaoui has developed a way to double the overall survival rate of his patients. Along with Professor Stephen Wigmore and consultant Chinnappa Reddy, they examine their patient, retired civil servant Wendy, with much more confidence in their ability to find and remove any visible signs of cancer. But their greatest challenge is to find and remove tumours so small they don’t appear on the scans, as leaving any visual disease behind will threaten Wendy’s chances of survival.
