Remembering Johnnie Walker
Jo Whiley presents a tribute to Johnnie Walker on what would have been his 80th birthday.
The legendary broadcaster Johnnie Walker had an incredible career spanning over 58 years, from making waves on Radio Caroline with the Pirates to becoming a voice synonymous with ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio. Johnnie was a true broadcasting giant.
Very sadly, we lost this remarkable man at the end of last year. Johnnie wasn’t just one of our greatest DJs — he was warm, always authentic, with a great sense of mischief, and, above all, a genuine love for music. Sunday 30th March would have been his 80th birthday, and we’re here to celebrate his life, his legacy, and the unforgettable impact he had.
In this very special programme, presented by Jo Whiley, we’ll be sharing heartfelt memories from his colleagues, the many artists he supported, and some of his closest friends. It's an intimate journey, filled with stories, reflections, and of course, the incredible music that Johnnie was so passionate about.
It’s truly a testament to Johnnie, that we’ve got an extraordinary line up of contributors — including Elton John, Cliff Richard, Mick Fleetwood, Robert Plant, Elkie Brooks, Brian May, Rod Stewart, Peter Kay, Bonnie Raitt, Damon Hill, Hugh Bonneville and so many many more. The list is absolutely magnificent, and it’s not just the music world that’s come together to pay tribute.
You will get to hear strong recurring themes of music, fun, rebellion, kindness, humility and spirituality. Johnnie was unique - an incredible broadcaster - one of our greatest - he lived a big colourful life and this collection of delightful surprises brings all of these to the fore.
