The London Philharmonic plays Symphonie Fantastique
The LPO, under Edward Gardner, play Sphinx, by David Sawer; Benjamin Britten's Violin Concerto, with soloist Augustin Hadelich; and the Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz.
Martin Handley presents a concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Edward Gardner, performing the world premiere of Sphinx, by David Sawer - an evocation in music of the mythical beast; that's followed by Benjamin Britten's Violin Concerto, a masterpiece from the 1930s played by violin virtuoso Augustin Hadelich; and the concert ends with the mighty Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz, a wild work which astonished listeners at its first performance in Paris in 1830. Berlioz claimed that his Symphonie depicted the opium dream of a love-tortured artist, from romantic delirium to death and damnation.
Recorded at the Royal Festival Hall on 26th February, and presented by Martin Handley.
