Murrayfield At 100

Andrew Cotter looks back on 100 years of Murrayfield in Edinburgh and tells the story around the building of the stadium, and there's match highlights from 100 years of Murrayfield Magic.

Murrayfield Stadium is 100 years old, and to celebrate, Scotland v The World looks back at the story of this incredible, world-famous arena. The first game at Murrayfield on 21 March 1925 just happened to be a Grand Slam decider against England, which Scotland won! We’ll look back on this momentous match and other key games from the last 100 years of action with contributions from the likes of Grand Slam winning coach Jim Telfer, former Radio Scotland rugby commentator Bill Johnstone, 1990 Grand Slam winner Scott Hastings, and Women’s Rugby Internationalist Melanie Christie.

The story around the building of Murrayfield is a fascinating one and highlights the drive and ambition of the SRU to create a 70,000-capacity arena. The stadium continued to innovate over the years and was one of the first sports grounds to have under-soil heating, and of course, Murrayfield is a cultural landmark in Scotland, as it now plays host to elite events and big concerts, with Oasis rolling up this year.
