Mairi’s back at work in her island garden, embracing the joys and challenges of growing in the Hebrides and learning from other passionate growers along the way.

It’s Mairi Gillies’s second year growing in her garden on the island of Lewis. We follow her as she further develops the garden and seeks advice and inspiration from other enthusiastic growers.

Although Mairi is an experienced horticulturalist, gardening on a Hebridean island with its unique weather challenges was a new experience for her. Last year, we saw her start to develop the garden, a large space surrounding a new home which was in need of some TLC. Mairi has a limited budget and aims to keep her carbon footprint as low as possible.

In this episode, Mairi makes collars for her brassicas using materials she has to hand and visits two experienced island gardeners, Angus Macdonald and David Murdo Mackay. Angus has a flourishing vegetable and fruit garden and David has created a woodland in an exposed coastal location on the west side of the island. Mairi also travels to a specialist organic herb nursery in the Black Isle.
