Sir James MacMillan: Where the Lugar meets the Glaisnock

The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales pair Holst, Vaughan Williams, and Stravinsky with conductor Sir James MacMillan, alongside the World Premiere of his new work for euphonium.

Composer and conductor Sir James MacMillan joins the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales to present the World Premiere of his new work for Euphonium and String Orchestra, Where the Lugar meets the Glaisnock, alongside short works by Holst and Vaughan Williams, and two of Stravinsky's "symphonies". Folk music abounds in three of the works: Holst wrote his own folk tune for his kaleidoscopic Capriccio, written originally for an American jazz band; Vaughan Williams alluded to English folk songs for his depiction of the vast and bleak landscape of the Fen Country; and Stravinsky disguised Russian folk themes in his tribute to Debussy, his Symphonies of Wind Instruments.

Where the Lugar meets the Glaisnock is a love letter to the location where the two rivers of the title meet in the Ayrshire town of Cumnock, where Sir James MacMillan grew up. He wrote it for euphonium in tribute to his grandfather who played the instrument in the local colliery bands, and also for the star euphonium player David Childs, who will give this World Premiere performance. To complete the concert, Stravinsky's response to the atrocities of World War II, which he called his "war symphony" - the Symphony in Three Movements.
