5. John Singleton Copley

Episode 5 of 6

George Cole profiles another Victorian buried in Highgate - the trial barrister and prosecutor for a monarch. From 1996.

George Cole reveals the story of another extraordinary Victorian buried in London's Highgate Cemetery.

Barrister John Singleton Copley was responsible for conducting the prosecution of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales and Queen-in-waiting.

When George IV ascended to the throne on the death of his father in 1820, he wanted rid of Caroline - from whom he'd long been estranged.

So he introduced a Bill before the House of Lords to try and dissolve the marriage.

Prevented by the King from entering Westminster Abbey for her own Coronation, Caroline died a few weeks later.

George Cole is the Sexton.
