Tom McKinney presents Radio 3’s Breakfast show live from Salford, including ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 3’s 25 for 25: Sounds of the Century – a series of brand new commissions celebrating and commemorating some of the biggest events of the 21st century so far. This week, Novello award-winning composer Gavin Higgins commemorates the closure of the Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire, which marked the end of deep-pit coal mining in the UK, in his piece Cortège for a Coal Mine. Recorded by the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra the piece is a tribute to the communities and music that were formed alongside Britain’s coal pits and collieries.
