As part of Radio 2's commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of VE-Day, Dermot O'Leary treats you to a Sounds of the 40s Special Playlist. Highlighting the music, movies and memories as Allies enjoyed the celebrations that were erupting on the streets, villages, towns and cities which were festooned with flags and bunting, while crowded homes and pubs stayed open into the night.
You'll hear excerpts from the crowds outside Buckingham Palace and learn who the mystery trumpeter was keeping the crowd entertained, it was in fact none other than Humphrey Lyttelton. Also, we'll hear how a soldier came straight from the shore back to work before he could meet his son in an emotional reunion. There's a very rare interview from Queen Elizabeth the Second in 1985, confirming that on the evening of VE Day, the King and Queen gave the young Princesses permission to go and mingle and celebrate with the crowds. Followed by an episode of Desert Island Disc, when Roy Plumley got to talk with Princess Margaret who confirms that story. Plus you'll hear anecdotes as Dermot takes us back to relive May 8th 1945, Victory in Europe Day, when Germany unconditionally surrendered its military forces to the Allies, of World War II.
