The 80th Anniversary of VE Day
Pam Rhodes marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day by sharing the memories of those who were there and recalling the elation and relief of that glorious day.
Pam Rhodes marks a magnificent milestone, the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, by speaking to those who remember the elation of that glorious day.
At the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, Pam meets the Very Rev Dean Andrew Tremlett to explore why the cathedral was such a focus of hope during the war and on VE Day itself. Pam also meets pageant master Bruno Peek, who is planning the 80th-anniversary celebrations, encouraging the country to light lanterns of peace and sing a special hymn on the day.
Pam gets her glad rags on to join a VE Day party at a living history museum. Those gathered share first-hand accounts of the war and of VE Day, and Pam hears how prayer played a crucial part.
We also meet 104-year-old female war veteran Christian Lamb, whose maps helped achieve victory on D-Day, a turning point towards the Allies winning the war.
With music to honour VE Day, including a special performance from Aled Jones on the Normandy beaches.
