Ireland during the great famine of the 1840s

During the period of 1845-50, Ireland suffered a series of famines that are known collectively as the Great Famine.

Two English gentlemen of the 19th century, Lord Dufferin and the Honourable George Boyle, witnessed the poverty of Irish men, women and children in the 1840s. The suffering they observed, revealed the poor living conditions, clothing, health, dismal housing, hunger and manner of the people in Skibereen, Ireland. Their description also recalls a near food riot when they tried to deliver bread to the needy in the community.

The clip is accompanied by vivid drawings of children and young adults from the time.
