Einojuhani Rautavaara: Cantus Arcticus
With the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales conducted by B. Tommy Andersson. Live from Hoddinott Hall. Cardiff.
Cantus Arcticus, subtitled 'Concerto for Birds and Orchestra' is Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara's best-known work. It has three movements; in 'The Marsh', two flutes usher in the sounds of a large and vocal group of marsh birds; 'Melancholy' includes the song of the shore lark, transposed down two octaves to give it an eerie effect; and 'Swans Migrating' features the cries of Whooper Swans. The music is by turns magical, thrilling and serene.
