Archbishop 脫scar Romero openly criticised injustice and torture by the government. On the 24th March 1980 he was assassinated. His death sparked a civil war. Visiting El Salvador, where 75,000 died during 12 years of civil war between left-wing guerrillas and a US-backed government.
