Changes to ��ѿ��ý Audio On Demand

We are making changes to how we support ��ѿ��ý Audio On Demand. If you listen via ��ѿ��ý Sounds (or a device that is listed on the Sounds help site) you will not be affected, but if you use a third party app, an internet radio or bespoke device, these changes may affect you. Whilst ��ѿ��ý Podcasts remain available to third party podcast apps, other on demand content will now only be available on ��ѿ��ý Sounds.

Why are you making these changes?

The ��ѿ��ý must do everything reasonable to ensure that UK listeners are able to access the public services that are intended for them, in a range of convenient and cost-effective ways. We also must ensure that third parties are able to meet ��ѿ��ý requirements including prominence, which helps listeners to find content we’ve made for them, and sharing of data, which helps us understand what people are listening to, which in turn helps us improve our content and services. At the same time, it’s important we make sure that third parties do not use our streams without permission in non-compliant ways, like serving advertisements around our on demand content, for example. As such, we will start restricting access to some of our audio (non-podcast) on demand content.

These changes take effect from the 8 July 2024. This does not affect ��ѿ��ý Sounds, or ��ѿ��ý podcasts that are available via podcast apps.

We notified device manufacturers, where possible, in January 2024.

What should I do if I lose access to ��ѿ��ý Audio On Demand?

If using a third-party app, use ��ѿ��ý Sounds instead. If you are using an internet radio device, you may lose access to some audio on demand content, but our podcasts will still be available on many devices. You might still be able to listen to ��ѿ��ý audio on demand via your device by streaming from the ��ѿ��ý Sounds app on a smartphone or tablet (Bluetooth, Airplay or Chromecast).

We are unable to grant access to individual users and suggest you use ��ѿ��ý Sounds instead.

Where can I find categories on ��ѿ��ý Sounds?

On the ��ѿ��ý Sounds website and ��ѿ��ý Sounds mobile/tablet app, head to the homepage and scroll down. You'll find the Categories grid just above your Bookmarks.

Once you're there, click on View all categories to see our full list of categories on ��ѿ��ý Sounds. From there you can search through several music or speech categories and subcategories.

You can sort categories and subcategories by Popular, Latest or A-Z. If a category is split into subcategories, for example Comedy, just scroll down the list of subcategories to the All Comedy section. Then click View all. From there, you can filter the entire category by Popular, Latest or A-Z.

Using the ��ѿ��ý Sounds TV app?

Head to the ��ѿ��ýpage and scroll down to find the list of categories. You can select to view all categories on the right hand side.

When in view all, you can choose to Browse all Music or Browse all Speech.

Transcript and Subtitling trial on ��ѿ��ý Sounds

We have begun a trial to see if we can use software to help generate subtitles and transcripts for programmes and podcasts on ��ѿ��ý Sounds, and to find out how well it works.

At first, we will be adding subtitles and transcripts to a few select programmes; they will be available when listening on demand (catch-up) on ��ѿ��ý Sounds via a web browser and later in the trial will also be on the Android and Apple ��ѿ��ý Sounds apps. If all goes well, we plan to bring more programmes into the trial as it progresses.

A producer will be checking the transcripts before they are published to make sure they’re accurate. So, there may be a delay between the programme first being made available and the subtitles and transcripts appearing.

Since this is a trial, there is no need to report any errors you might spot. We will be closely assessing the accuracy of the text.

How to enable subtitles and view transcripts

There will be a subtitle icon in the media player that can be selected when subtitles are available, just like on ��ѿ��ý iPlayer.

Why has the ��ѿ��ý closed the iPlayer Radio app?

��ѿ��ý Sounds is now the home for all ��ѿ��ý audio. As well as 80,000 hours of radio, exclusive music mixes and brilliant podcasts, ��ѿ��ý Sounds now has all the key features iPlayer Radio had and much more, including live radio streams, Live Restart, Continue Listening, My Sounds, more categories, and personalised and curated recommendations.

When did this happen?

The ��ѿ��ý Sounds website was launched in late 2018. The ��ѿ��ý Sounds app replaced the iPlayer Radio app in the UK in September 2019, and the international iPlayer Radio app closed in Autumn 2020.

Why can’t I use the ��ѿ��ý Sounds app on my device?

It is standard practice for updated apps to no longer support older operating systems. This is the case for iPlayer as well as iPlayer Radio, and apps by other companies and organisations. The ��ѿ��ý Sounds app requires users to have a device which is capable of running iOS 12.2, Android 5 or Amazon OS 5 (or above). Supporting operating systems older than this is very costly and does not represent good value for money for licence fee payers, given the relatively small number of users we have still using those older operating systems. However, in the majority of cases users who have older devices which cannot be upgraded can still use ��ѿ��ý Sounds via the web at bbc.co.uk/sounds. What devices and operating systems does ��ѿ��ý Sounds support?

��ѿ��ý Sounds app requires users to have a device which is capable of running iOS 12.2, Android 5 or Amazon OS 5 (or above). You can read more on this here: Can I use ��ѿ��ý Sounds on my mobile or tablet. Here's where you can find the app:

Why has the iPlayer Radio app closed outside the UK?

The ��ѿ��ý Sounds app is now available in app stores around the world. We closed the international iPlayer Radio app in November 2020 as part of our plan to make ��ѿ��ý Sounds the one place for all ��ѿ��ý audio.

Why can't I install ��ѿ��ý Sounds in my country?

Why am I presented with ��ѿ��ý Audio instead of ��ѿ��ý Sounds in the UK?

If you live in the UK and no longer see links to ��ѿ��ý Sounds on our website, it’s likely because you are using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). This would result in being directed to the bbc.com website, intended for international users, rather than bbc.co.uk, which serves our UK audience.

In February 2025, ��ѿ��ý.com launched a new audio experience, replacing links to Sounds. You can read more about this at ��ѿ��ý.com: ��ѿ��ý Podcasts and audio are now available on ��ѿ��ý.com.

If you disable your VPN, you should be redirected back to bbc.co.uk, and the links to Sounds will be restored.

Where can I find the schedules for radio stations?

On the ��ѿ��ý Sounds website

Head to the schedules page to find the schedules for every national and local ��ѿ��ý radio station. Just select a radio station to see its schedule for today.

You can also find the schedules from the top right corner of the ��ѿ��ý Sounds website homepage:

At the top of the homepage, tap Stations & Schedules. This will default to the schedule for the station you last listened to live.

Swipe across the stations at the top to see the schedule for each station.
Swipe across or tap the arrows underneath the station to see the schedule for a specific date.

At the moment, schedules aren't available on the ��ѿ��ý Sounds TV app, however you can still listen to live streams and on-demand programmes, as well as your favourite shows in My Sounds.

What happened to My Tracks?

Due to low usage, ��ѿ��ý Music took the decision to close the functionality of adding tracks to My Tracks.

We regularly evaluate features and services and this helps us prioritise what we develop. So while this feature has closed, ��ѿ��ý Sounds now allows you to export the songs you've heard to either Spotify or Apple Music. Head to the Can I export a song to my music streaming service? page for more information.

You will still be able to find the best music-related audio from across the ��ѿ��ý, including radio, podcasts, and music mixes, at ��ѿ��ý Sounds.

Video, including programmes and performance clips, can be found in the Music category on ��ѿ��ý iPlayer.

Can I listen to ��ѿ��ý podcasts on Google platforms (including Google ��ѿ��ý and Google Podcast app)?

The ��ѿ��ý requires platforms (such as Google’s Assistant) to meet certain conditions for ��ѿ��ý content to be available on their services. We seek to make our content as accessible to audiences as possible, but until it can be made available in a way that meets our Terms of Use and the ��ѿ��ý’s Distribution Policy, certain ��ѿ��ý content will be unavailable through specific Google products.

What is affected?

Listeners will have difficulty accessing ��ѿ��ý podcasts via the Google Podcast app and they will not be able to directly access ��ѿ��ý podcasts via the Google Assistant (Google ��ѿ��ý).

Where can listeners go instead?

In the UK, listeners will still be able to access our podcasts on the free ��ѿ��ý Sounds app and website. UK listeners using Google ��ѿ��ý can continue to access ��ѿ��ý podcasts by casting from the ��ѿ��ý Sounds app or, if using a laptop, the ��ѿ��ý Sounds website on the Chrome browser. Outside the UK, listeners can access our podcasts on the ��ѿ��ý Sounds website (where casting is supported) and the ��ѿ��ý Sounds app (where available).

Are any other podcast services affected by this change?

No. This only affects Google.

Changes to ��ѿ��ý Radio on TuneIn

The ��ѿ��ý’s live radio streams are no longer available via TuneIn on the following platforms in the UK.

The ��ѿ��ý’s radio stations can be accessed on the ��ѿ��ý Sounds website and apps for Android and iOS devices, which also let you play programmes on a wide range of speakers via wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Chromecast and Apple AirPlay. This change occurred in August 2019.

If you have Amazon Echo speakers or many other devices which support Alexa, you can listen to ��ѿ��ý radio stations via the ��ѿ��ý’s Alexa skill. And, if you have a Google ��ѿ��ý device, you can listen to ��ѿ��ý stations using either Chromecast or your voice. ��ѿ��ý stations can also be accessed on digital TV platforms and DAB digital radio.

There are a number of older audio devices that offer an internet radio service powered by TuneIn which will not currently be affected by this change.

Why can I no longer listen to ��ѿ��ý live Radio (Shoutcast)?

If you can no longer play ��ѿ��ý live radio on your internet radio device, it is likely it was using the Shoutcast streaming technology, which the ��ѿ��ý no longer supports. We will continue to support ��ѿ��ý live radio online using HLS and DASH streaming technologies which will be available to the ��ѿ��ý’s distribution partners.

Why did Shoutcast support end?

Shoutcast is an older streaming technology and many connected radio devices in the UK no longer use it for ��ѿ��ý streams. Ending support for Shoutcast will enable us to focus on the two most popular technologies currently used – HLS and DASH. This will allow us to understand more about how and where our content is consumed and will help us improve the services we offer to our listeners. Manufacturers and radio aggregators were notified of the changes in May 2022. We also played a message informing of the changes on all ��ѿ��ý Shoutcast streams since November last year.

Can I get ��ѿ��ý live radio back on my Internet Radio device?

Please contact your manufacturer if you have lost ��ѿ��ý live radio to check if your device can be updated. If this is not possible, you still might be able to use the device by streaming live ��ѿ��ý radio from the ��ѿ��ý Sounds app on a smartphone or tablet (Bluetooth, Airplay or Chromecast).

What about ��ѿ��ý World Service?
