About This Event
Intimate, haunting and expressing the essence of traditional English folk song, Angeline Morrison’s 2022 album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience tells the untold stories of people from the African diaspora and their place in these islands. Here are musical tales of the ‘Unknown African Boy (d.1830)’, an enslaved child whose body was washed up on the Isles of Scilly; or ‘Black John’, the first known Black horticulturist in Britain; or ‘The Beautiful Spotted Black Boy’, an enslaved child born with vitiligo, whose patchy complexion caused him to be paraded as a curiosity. In researching and telling these stories, Morrison both preserves and reinvigorates the rich tapestry of English folk music. She performs here with The Sorrow Songs Band and special guests Eliza Carthy and Alex Neilson.
