
Life on a plantation
Despite all the methods used to try to break the spirit of slaves, we know that many directly resisted or refused to co-operate. As punishment, slaves were routinely beaten or separated from their families. Slaves still built a family life outside of their working hours, and slave communities looked after each other. They also managed to keep their African traditions alive through telling stories and folklore.
