Maroons and runaways
Slaves often ran away from plantations. Some slaves disappeared for good, while others simply absconded for a night. The story of the Jamaican Maroons, free-living rebel slaves, is described. The story explains how Jamaican Maroons were able to resist attempts by the British to recapture them. The British actually made peace treaties with the Maroons and gave them land.
