The abolitionist movement
The origins of the anti-slavery (or abolitionist) movement are described along with the aims and motives of some of the key figures.
In 1828 a group of people were trying to get the government to abolish slavery. They became known as the abolitionists. They travelled the length of the country to drum up support for their cause, giving talks and lectures, and encouraging former slaves to publish their autobiographies. In 1807 parliament passed the law banning the slave trade.
